Bruce T. Gourley

Bruce T. Gourley currently serves as the Interim Director of The Center for Baptist Studies. A 1988 graduate of Mercer University with majors in Christianity and English, Gourley also has an M. Div. degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and is a History Ph. D. candidate (ABD) at Auburn University. He previously taught Church History at Yellowstone Baptist College in Billings, Montana, where he also served as a campus minister.  The author of one book and numerous journal articles, Gourley has spoken at denominational meetings, college campuses and local churches. In addition to his position at the Center, Gourley is the Online Editor of Baptists Today, owner of the BaptistLife.Com website, and webmaster for the Baptist History and Heritage Society.  He also maintains a personal website.   (Email)

Wilfred Platt

Dr. Wil Platt serves as Assistant to the Director, and Associate Editor of The Baptist Studies Bulletin, a monthly emagazine published by The Center for Baptist Studies. Platt earned degrees from Furman University (A.B), Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (B.D), Ohio University (M.A.), and the University of Georgia (Ph.D). He was a member of the History Department of the College of Liberal Arts for more than thirty years and Associate Dean of the College for sixteen years. From 2002-2005, he directed the Honors Program for undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, the Stetson School of Business and Economics and the Tift College of Education. (Email)

Walter B. Shurden

Walter B. Shurden, the founding executive director of the Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer, retired from Mercer University on 31 December 2007. Since his retirement he carries the title of “Minister at Large, Mercer University.” A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Dr. Shurden served at Mercer for almost twenty-five years as Callaway Professor of Christianity in the Roberts Department of Christianity in the College of Liberal Arts. During eighteen of those years, he served as Chair of the Roberts Department of Christianity and for almost seven years as Executive Director of The Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
