What a wonderful opportunity and privilege it was to be the sixth Newman Fellow at Mercer University. The wonderful hospitality of Dr. Shurden, his wife, and Greg Thompson made an enjoyable week even better as I had the opportunity to fellowship with other family members in the Baptist family. The week was fruitful for me. I came wanting to research for information on my thesis and left with a newfound appreciation of the life of E.Y. Mullins. My readings throughout the whole week allowed to me to really focus my work and now I am looking forward to finishing this thesis on the life of Mullins. Dr. Shurden proved to be a valuable resource as did the staff of special collections at the Tarver Library. They went well out of their way to help this Texan mine the amazing resources of the Tarver Library. I would highly recommend that anyone looking for a week to broaden their understanding of Baptist history to apply for this sabbatical. While trying to read everything for the week is a little like trying to drink water out of a fire hose, I left relaxed, refreshed, and rejuvenated for the work ahead. |
