Creighton, Mandell, an English historian, educator, and Anglican bishop wrote: "The one real object of education is to have a man in the condition of continually asking questions." I spent a marvelous week as a Newman scholar continually asking questions. My research topic was the article on the Bible in the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. Specifically why was the phrase "Jesus is the criterion for interpretation" included and what did the writers intend?

My brothers and sisters at Mercer made the week a blessing. I had time to read, reflect, ask questions and listen. It was great tonic for my mind and soul.

Buddy Shurden started the week asking questions about me, the church I serve and my research topic. During the week our conversations produced more questions and reflection. Buddy’s fertile ever questioning mind challenged and motivated me. Bruce Gourley was the ever present all-knowing researcher. He helped me chase down quotes, misquotes and phone numbers. His keen mind helped sharpen my questions and find answers. His internet expertise is amazing.

Susan Broome listened with patience to my questions about research and always gave clear concise and helpful direction. The resources at the Tarver Library were significant. Susan directed me to other university libraries with pertinent holdings.

Robert Gardner answered questions I had not yet thought to ask. His sharp mind is a great repository of information.

The convenience and comfort of the Lee Alumni House was a blessing. The ease and access to Baptist Center offices, Library and cafeteria made the week hassle free.

Pastors rarely find time to read extensively, ponder what they read and engage in challenging dialogue with colleagues. The week was stimulating intellectually and spiritually. A week at Mercer was one of God’s choice blessings last year. I found some answers that week but thank God I left asking questions.
