Return to Sabbaticals Homepage After spending a week at Mercer University, my only response can be of appreciation to the Center for Baptist Studies. The A. H. Newman Scholar program provided concentrated, directed study that offered renewal and vision for me. I have already begun to recommend it to others with enthusiasm and confidence. The resources of the center including the vast research materials at the library of Mercer University as well as the staff of Buddy Shurden and Bruce Gourley could be rarely matched. The reading designed for the Mercer Certificate in Baptist Studies prepared me for my specific week of study by painting large, broad strokes of Baptist identity and history. Exploring Baptist origins, missions, and values invigorated me. The readings were relevant to ministry within the local congregation and informative to the work of the church within contemporary society. The guidance I received for my particular study while on campus was encouraging and challenging. All of the right questions were asked and the necessary answers provided. I felt the freedom that should accompany individual research, but was given the focus I needed to benefit from my reading. The week was extremely valuable to me personally as well as to my ministry. And what better place to be than the beautiful campus of Mercer University with such hospitable hosts from the Center for Baptist Studies, thank you for the opportunity! |
