Return to Sabbaticals
Homepage I recently spent a week of study and reading at Mercer University as an A. H. Newman Scholars. This mini-sabbatical provided a time of uninterrupted study with consultation and guidance by Dr. Walter Shurden, director of the Center for Baptist Studies. My week was very productive and highly stimulating toward a better understanding of Baptist history. I came to the sabbatical week with an awareness of the individual influence of key personalities on the direction of Baptist life and history. In consultation with Dr. Shurden we chose figures that we thought made the greatest contributions to Baptist distinctives. I propose to use this material in a series of sermons on Sunday evenings spot-lighting influential persons and the scriptural underpinnings for their contributions. I found two things about this week especially helpful. First, I was given uninterrupted time to read. Reading time without interruptions is a precious commodity and hard to come by for the pastor. The second element that made the week so valuable was the direction and guidance of Dr. Shurden. He helped me to decide on key individuals for study and recommended sources to be used. I express my gratitude to Dr. Shurden and the Center for Baptist Studies for a truly great week. I also say thanks to Greg Thompson for his help during the week.
